About us

hongyi.ai and 宏依 (Hongyi) ("we", "us") are a public-interest creative project run by an individual in their spare time. We collect everyday people's stories and turn some of them into AI music films, which are shown on hongyi.ai so more people can see these stories.

Privacy policy

In short: we collect only what is needed to make your film, we never sell personal data, and we hold as little as possible.

What we collect

• What you enter in the form: name, email, phone, the occasion, the story you want told, song/style preferences, timing, what materials you can provide, subtitle preference, whether real names may appear, who told you about us, and any notes.
• What you send through “Contact us”: name, email, phone (optional), topic and your message.
• Materials you send us: photos, video, audio recordings, written text.
• Your story and feedback: the text and voice recordings you send us by email or text message — telling your story, answering our question list, or giving notes on each step.
• Site analytics: anonymous statistics via Google Analytics 4 (page views, referrer, device type), which uses cookies.

How we use it

• To reply to your message;
• To read your story and, if we make your film, to make it;
• To contact you about your story and your film (email or text);
• To understand how the site is used so we can improve it.

We do not sell, rent or trade your information, and we do not use it for anything unrelated to your story and your film.

Who else touches this data

We rely on these third parties, each governed by its own privacy policy:

• Google (Workspace email, Google Forms, Apps Script, Google Analytics) — form responses, “Contact us” messages, correspondence, site statistics;
• Netlify — website hosting;
• YouTube / Bilibili — used only to host finished films that have been published (see "Public display" below).

We run no database of our own: beyond the services above, we keep no separate copy of your details.

Public display

Films made in this project are shown publicly on hongyi.ai and on our video-platform accounts, where anyone can watch them. We ask you to confirm before a film goes live, and you can ask us to leave out real names. Once live, a film stays up for at least one year (Participation terms, section 3). We will never publish your identity documents, home address, phone number or banking details.

How long we keep things

• Materials you supplied (photos, video, audio, text): deleted between 7 and 14 days after the finished film goes live. We hold them that long in case a final adjustment is needed. If we decide not to make a film from your story, we delete any materials you sent.
• Email and form records: kept only as long as the project needs them.
• The finished film itself: we keep it, to show it on hongyi.ai and our video-platform accounts — for at least one year after it goes live (Participation terms, section 3).

You can also ask us to delete your materials sooner and we will, within a reasonable period. We recommend keeping your own copy of the originals.

Your rights

You may ask to see the information we hold about you, correct it, delete your materials, or withdraw consent you previously gave. Write to admin@hongyi.ai and we will respond within 30 days. Taking down a film that has already gone live follows the Participation terms, section 3. If you are in the EU, California or a similar jurisdiction you may have additional statutory rights; we handle those requests through the same process.

Cookies

This site uses Google Analytics 4 cookies for anonymous traffic statistics. You can block cookies in your browser without affecting browsing or sharing your story. We serve no ads and do no cross-site tracking.

A/B tests

To learn which wording of our homepage works better, we sometimes show each visitor one of two versions of some text, chosen at random (an “A/B test”). Your browser remembers which version you saw, so it stays the same when you come back. Which version you saw is recorded only in our anonymous Google Analytics statistics and is never linked to your name or email.

Minors

This project is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If your film involves a minor's photographs or story, please make sure you are their guardian or have the guardian's consent.

International transfers

The services we use (Google, Netlify) operate primarily in the United States, so your data may be stored or processed there. By sharing your story, you understand this.

Participation terms

By sharing your story with us you agree to the following.

1. How the project works

• Sharing a story is not a guarantee. We read every story carefully, but with limited time we can't make every one; we give priority to those who need it most, and we decide which stories to make.
• No fixed date. If we make your film, we check in with you at each step — lyrics, song, artwork (characters, backgrounds, props), keyframes and the finished film. How long it takes depends on our schedule and how quickly you reply.
• Each film is about 3 minutes, with bilingual Chinese/English subtitles by default.
• Everything happens in writing (email, text message) or by voice recording, including telling us your story and giving notes. We don't schedule phone or video interviews.
• Music is AI-generated only. The lyrics and music are created by AI; we don't use existing commercial songs, so films can be shown publicly without copyright issues.
• We may pause, change or end the project, or stop work on a particular film, at any time. If we stop work on your film, we tell you and delete your materials.

2. The materials you give us

When you send us photos, video, audio or text, you represent that:

• you have the right to use those materials, or have permission from whoever does;
• where they show other people's likeness or identifying information, you have those people's consent;
• they infringe no third party's copyright, likeness, privacy or other rights, and break no law.

You allow us to use and edit those materials to make your film, and to show the finished film publicly on hongyi.ai and on our video-platform accounts and social media. We ask you to confirm before a film goes live. Once it is live, it stays up for at least one year (section 3).

If we reasonably believe materials may infringe rights or break the law, we may decline or stop the work.

3. Rights in the finished film

• You may watch the published film and share its link with anyone, including on your own social media.
• We show finished films on hongyi.ai and our video-platform accounts, which is the purpose of this project.
• A film stays on hongyi.ai for at least one year after it goes live, because every film takes a lot of time and care to make. After it has been live for a full year, you can write to admin@hongyi.ai to ask us to take it down, and we will remove it from hongyi.ai and our video-platform accounts within a reasonable period. The only exception is where the law requires us to remove it sooner.
• The AI-generated imagery and music (including lyrics) in the film remain ours; this does not limit your use of the film as described above.

4. About the AI

The imagery and music in this project are generated by AI, created from the story and materials you provide. The result is an artistic work, not documentary footage; people and places on screen may be stylised or invented. Where a film depicts a real person, we make it only on the basis that you have the necessary consent.

5. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from taking part in this project. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

6. Changes to these terms

We may update this page and will change the "Last updated" date at the top when we do.

7. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, and the courts of Santa Clara County, California have jurisdiction. If mandatory law where you live gives you stronger rights, that law prevails.
